Stomach pain, also known as abdominal pain, refers to discomfort or distress felt in the area between the chest and the pelvis. It is a common symptom that can be caused by a wide range of factors, including digestive issues, infections, inflammation, organ disorders, and even emotional or psychological factors. The location, intensity, duration, and accompanying symptoms of stomach pain can provide clues to its underlying cause.

The abdomen is divided into four quadrants: the upper right, upper left, lower right, and lower left quadrants. Stomach pain can be localized to one specific area or be diffuse, spreading across multiple regions. The pain can range from mild to severe, and it may be sharp, cramp-like, dull, burning, or colicky in nature.

Here are seven types of stomach pain and their potential causes:

  1. Cramp-like pain: This type of pain is characterized by sharp, intermittent, and squeezing sensations. It is often associated with conditions such as gas, indigestion, constipation, and menstrual cramps.
  2. Burning pain: A burning sensation in the stomach can be indicative of acid reflux, gastritis, or an ulcer. These conditions typically involve the inflammation or erosion of the stomach lining.
  3. Sharp, stabbing pain: Sharp and stabbing pain in the abdomen can be caused by conditions like appendicitis, gallstones, kidney stones, or a bowel obstruction. These conditions often require immediate medical attention.
  4. Colicky pain: Colicky pain is characterized by recurrent episodes of severe pain that come and go. Conditions such as kidney stones, intestinal obstruction, or gallbladder problems can cause this type of pain.
  5. Dull, aching pain: Dull and persistent aching pain in the stomach can be related to conditions such as gastritis, peptic ulcers, or irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
  6. Bloating and distension: Abdominal bloating and distension can cause discomfort and a feeling of fullness. It can be associated with conditions like gas, indigestion, constipation, or gastrointestinal disorders such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).
  7. Cramping and diarrhea: Crampy pain accompanied by diarrhea can be a symptom of various gastrointestinal infections or conditions like food poisoning, viral gastroenteritis, or inflammatory bowel disease.

It’s important to note that these descriptions are general and not meant to diagnose specific conditions. If you’re experiencing stomach pain or any concerning symptoms, it’s recommended to consult with a healthcare professional for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment.

Here are seven types of stomach pain that can be associated with infections:

  1. Gastroenteritis pain: Gastroenteritis, commonly known as the stomach flu, is an infection of the gastrointestinal tract. It can cause abdominal pain, cramping, and discomfort. Viruses (such as norovirus or rotavirus), bacteria (such as Salmonella or E. coli), or parasites (such as Giardia) can cause gastroenteritis.
  2. Appendicitis pain: Appendicitis is an infection and inflammation of the appendix, a small organ located in the lower right abdomen. It typically causes severe pain in the lower right abdomen that starts as a dull ache and intensifies into a sharp, persistent pain. Appendicitis requires immediate medical attention and usually requires surgical removal of the appendix.
  3. Urinary tract infection (UTI) pain: Although UTIs primarily affect the urinary system, they can cause lower abdominal pain or discomfort. This pain is usually felt in the area above the pubic bone and can be accompanied by other symptoms like a frequent urge to urinate, burning during urination, and cloudy or bloody urine.
  4. Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) pain: PID is an infection of the female reproductive organs, typically caused by sexually transmitted infections (STIs) like chlamydia or gonorrhea. It can cause lower abdominal pain, particularly around the pelvic region. Other symptoms may include abnormal vaginal discharge, painful intercourse, and irregular menstrual bleeding.
  5. Diverticulitis pain: Diverticulitis occurs when small pockets in the colon (diverticula) become infected or inflamed. It can cause severe pain, usually on the lower left side of the abdomen. Other symptoms may include fever, nausea, changes in bowel habits, and bloating.
  6. H. pylori infection pain: Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is a type of bacteria that can infect the stomach lining, leading to conditions like gastritis or peptic ulcers. The pain associated with an H. pylori infection is often described as a burning or gnawing sensation in the upper abdomen, particularly between meals or during the night.
  7. Parasitic infections pain: Certain parasitic infections, such as amoebiasis or intestinal worms (like roundworm, hookworm, or tapeworm), can cause abdominal pain. The pain may vary depending on the specific parasite and the affected area of the gastrointestinal tract.

If you suspect you have an infection causing stomach pain, it’s important to seek medical attention for proper diagnosis, treatment, and management of the underlying condition.
